About This Course

As we author items online and in print copyright is ever so important to consider. Yet most folks are not familiar with the nuances of this area of the law. We must be educated to avoid plagiarism and copyright violations regarding writing. This session will attempt to provide an overview of important laws involving copyright.

Drawing from its roots in the US Constitution and tracing its evolution through key legislation like the Copyright Revision Act of 1976, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), and the Teach Act, we examine what constitutes copyrightable material.

Key topics include:

  • The foundational requirements for copyright protection (originality, fixation in a tangible medium).
  • The exclusive rights granted to copyright holders (reproduction, distribution, performance, display, derivative works).
  • Important limitations on copyright, such as the doctrine of Fair Use, illustrated through landmark cases.
  • The role of copyright registration and its benefits.
  • Navigating copyright issues in the digital age and the impact of relevant laws.
  • Practical tips for individuals and organizations on copyright compliance and intellectual property policies.

Whether you are seeking continuing legal education, enhancing your business acumen, protecting your creative works, or simply gaining valuable knowledge, this course provides essential insights into safeguarding intellectual assets and avoiding infringement. Gain clarity on your rights and responsibilities in the complex world of copyright law.
