John Cole Scott leads CEF Advisors, advancing the legacy his father, George Cole Scott III, began during a 50-year career that included purchasing the firm in 1996. After earning a bachelor’s degree from the College of William & Mary, John Cole joined the firm in 2001 and has since focused on data-driven research and portfolio management in closed-end funds (CEFs), business development companies (BDCs), and interval funds. Frequently sought by investment groups, professional organizations, and national financial media, he provides perspective on CEF, BDC, and interval-fund markets. In 2008 he launched CEFData.com, a research platform that now tracks every U.S.-listed and non-listed CEF, BDC, and interval fund. In 2019 he founded the Active Investment Company Alliance (AICA) and continues to serve as executive chairman. John Cole holds the FINRA Series 66 license and the Certified Fund Specialist® (CFS®) designation. Based in Short Pump, Virginia, he lives with his wife, Katherine, their daughter, Lexi, and their Goldendoodle, Georgia. He serves on the board of the William & Mary Foundation and is a past treasurer and board member of the William & Mary Alumni Association. He is also an active member of the Richmond Association for Business Economics (RABE) and treasurer and investment committee co-chair for the New York State Society of the Cincinnati. A former collegiate a cappella founder, he still enjoys singing—especially karaoke—whenever time allows.
