About This Course

The asset management industry is knocking on the door of the 401(k) system in the U.S. While it has been the driving argument for inclusion, access alone doesn’t answer the harder questions. We step back from product hype to examine whether defined contribution plans are structurally equipped to handle illiquidity, complexity, and risk at scale. Joined by Dan Cahill of Partners Group and Drew Carrington of iCapital, we explore how global pension models, governance trade-offs, and participant behavior complicate the debate.

Key topics covered in this course include:

  • The Regulatory Landscape: Understanding the evolution of Department of Labor guidance, executive orders, and the litigation environment shaping fiduciary decisions.
  • Performance and Data Analysis: A critical look at the studies comparing private versus public market returns, dissecting the nuances of benchmarks, time horizons, and the dispersion of manager performance.
  • Global Perspectives: Comparing the US 401(k) model against international systems like Australia's Superannuation, the UK's NEST, and the Dutch pension system to understand alternative approaches to solving the "participant trilemma."
  • Structural Implementation: Examining the product innovations making access possible, including Collective Investment Trusts (CITs), target-date funds, and semi-liquid evergreen structures.
  • Investor Protection: Discussing the essential guardrails, education, and fiduciary responsibilities required to ensure that the democratization of finance does not come at the expense of retirement security.

Join us as we navigate the structural, ethical, and financial implications of bringing private markets to the masses, providing the clarity needed to understand the future of capital allocation in retirement planning.
