This course is for those new to nonprofit boards and provides insights for those with prior board experience.
This course will cover the duties of financial professionals who serve as board members. I will begin by discussing the benefits you bring to a nonprofit board and how your board experience can benefit you. I will outline the three duties of all board members. We will also explore the personal liability risks associated with joining a board, as well as the risks faced by the organization. You will learn strategies to mitigate these risks.
The second half of the course delves deeper into nonprofit financial oversight. We will examine the financial policies that boards use to guide their organizations. I will explain how nonprofit financial statements differ from for-profit statements and how financial management practices are also different. We will discuss the duties of the finance committee and the audit committee, as well as the types of nonprofit audits and examinations. A fitting conclusion to this course on tax-exempt organizations will be a lesson on tax compliance. Ironic, isn't it?
